Yorkshire Tartan Army
Scotland Failed to raise any eyebrows with their win against Iceland, what was probably more notable was the performance.
Playing in an unfamiliar 4-3-3, Scotland started off slowly, with Iceland looking dangerous with every move, with Aaron Gunnarsson and Birkir Saevarsson looking particulaly dangerous. By contrast, Scotland looked unorganised in defence, and unimaginative going forward.
However, on 18 minutes, debutant Kirk Broadfoot, headed home Barry Robsons corner, and injected some much need confidence into Scotland. From then on, it was Scotland who looked more likely to score with each attack and Iceland became virtually overun in midfield.
Scotland nearly added to their lead 3 minutes later when Shaun Maloney whipped in an inch perfect cross to James McFadden, and it was only the timely intervention of Sigurdasson that kept the score 1-0.
Minutes from half time, Steve McManus cleared the ball from the goal line to deny Portsmouth's Hermann Hreidarsson the equaliser for Iceland.
Iceland had the bulk of the possesion after the restart, trying to find a way to drag themselves back into the game, and that was dealt another blow when James McFadden was hauled down in the box by Sigurdsson as he chased a Fletcher free-kick and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.
Mcfadden stepped up to take the penalty himself, but the keeper Kjartan Sturluson saved it, however McFadden and Robson both raced forward for the rebound, with McFadden appearing to prod the ball home.
Scotland appeared to be cruising, but on 76 minutes had captain Steve McManus sent off for what was deemed as a deliberate handball in the box, with the referee appropriatly pointing to the spot.
Eidur Gudjohnsen confidently put the ball past the outstanding Craig Gordon with ease.
Scotland then switched to a 4-1-4 formation bringing on Paul Hartley to shore up the defence in the holding midfiled role, and it was backs against the wall for Scotland as Iceland threw everything they had at them, the most notable of which was a thunderous shot from Helguson which cannoned off Gary Caldwell as 10 man Scotland held on for 3 much needed points.
